Norway, with its mountains and isolated valleys, produced rich and varied folk art. Norway's practitioners of weaving, floral painting, woodcarving, metalwork, and embroidery produced one of the richest folk art traditions to be found anywhere. It is a fine testimonial to those who produced the folk arts of generations or even centuries ago that these arts are still being practiced today. This book is a presentation of examples of folk art items that are found in America. Most of the items pictured were brought to America by immigrants and many of the items are still in the families through which they have passed from generation to generation. In order to provide photos of items not likely to be seen in other books, most of the photos were taken from items in private collections. By contacting many collectors and visiting families in which the objects are held, we have gained some perspective on the inventory of Norwegian folk art items in America. With over 140 new photographs, including 34 in full color, this book is indispensable for those interested in their Norwegian heritage, and a must for all who enjoy folk art. A truly special publication.
