From the collection of MM Tremonto, Paris.

Neo-Furniture by Claire Downey captures the experimental edge of furniture design at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s, documenting a generation of designers who pushed beyond the established language of modernism.

Downey surveys an eclectic international group of designers and makers through themes including Primitivism, New Baroque, New Naturalism, Bricolage, New Modern, and Post-Punk Romanticism. Richly illustrated throughout, the book features work by figures including André Dubreuil, Ron Arad, Tom Dixon, Marc Newson, Rei Kawakubo, and Masanori Umeda, among others. It is an especially useful snapshot of a moment when limited-production, handcrafted, and highly expressive furniture began to blur the boundaries between design, art, and sculpture.
