'Everything is Under Control (Inflated Patriotism)' features a traditional dining chair with the seat removed. In its place, another object designed for sitting: a vinyl USA eagle pool float, forced through the wooden frame and inflated to capacity. The piece uses objects of American life and leisure to examine how systems designed to provide comfort, stability, and freedom can become forces of pressure and constraint. Both absurd and dysfunctional, the work considers consumer culture, inflated patriotism, and the contradictions of contemporary America, with both “chairs” ultimately unable to function as intended.
