Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect and designer known for his contributions to modern furniture design. Mies van der Rohe, who is commonly referred to as simply "Mies," was born in 1886 in Aachen, Germany and studied at the Royal Technical School in Berlin. He began his career as an apprentice to the architect Bruno Paul and later worked as a designer and architect in Germany, the United States, and other countries.

Mies is known for his furniture designs, which are characterized by their clean, modern lines and use of high-quality materials such as steel, glass, and leather. He was particularly interested in creating designs that were functional, elegant, and timeless, and many of his furniture pieces have become iconic examples of modern design. Mies' work has been widely exhibited and is held in the collections of major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He died in 1969.
