Donald Judd was an American artist known for his contributions to the development of minimalism, a movement that emerged in the 1960s and was characterized by the use of simple, geometric forms and a focus on the inherent qualities of materials. Judd's work often took the form of large, box-like structures made of industrial materials such as aluminum and Plexiglas. He rejected traditional notions of artistic expression and sought to create works that were purely formal, with no reference to external meaning or symbolism.

Judd was born in Missouri in 1928 and received a degree in philosophy from Columbia University in 1953. He initially worked as a writer and art critic before turning to art-making in the 1960s. In addition to his work as an artist, Judd was also a writer and critic, and his essays and interviews are widely regarded as important contributions to the literature of minimalism and conceptual art. He died in 1994 in New York City.
