about: the Take Space workshop

Unblock.Space, a collective of neurodivergence activists, advocates, and allies from the design world, is offering a unique opportunity for six to ten neurodivergent individuals to design and make one or more chairs. The workshop is open to individuals who are 16 or older, have been diagnosed with neurodivergent conditions or self-diagnosed, and do not have to be formally trained designers and makers.

The workshop is designed to encourage participants to deconstruct and transform existing chairs or build new ones with available materials provided on-site, all of them reclaimed. Participants will be given a chance to explore the endless possibilities of chair design, which can range from expected and normative to unconventional and non-standard. They will be able to develop a personal object that is an extension and affirmation of themselves, and will be supported by one-to-one mentorship with the two Unblock.Space members and the support of Available Items.

Design is a powerful neurodivergent support tool that can be used as a language more than a technique. During the workshop, participants will be encouraged to explore collective work and group projects, which can result from collaborations and interdependency between people. At the end of the workshop, participants will own all the work developed, and there will be a public exhibition for those who are comfortable displaying their creations.

  • Unblock.Space and Available Items are collaborating to organize a chair design and making workshop from June 5-11, 2023, daily from 10-5pm. You can coem as go as you feel is necessary, no set agenda.
